Service Description
This course comprises one of a total of five modules required to complete an acoustic guitar and is a great alternative for those students who are unable to commit to the complete five-week course. Each one-week module is comprised of five full days of guitar making with your choice to build either a Parlour, OM, 000 or Dreadnought guitar under the expert guidance of luthier Michael Whitney. Building the Soundbox (Week / Module 1): At the end of the first one week course, students will have finished making many of the key components that comprise the body of the acoustic guitar such as completing and bracing the back plate, installing the rosette, bending the sides of the guitar and milling the neck and tail blocks. PLEASE NOTE: Four additional one-week modules / courses are required to comlpete the guitar: Finishing the Soundbox (Week / Module 2): At the end of this second week, students will have assembled their rim, installed and carved their soundboard bracing, voiced the top and installed their liners in preparation to receive soundboard and back plate. Affixing the Plates and Binding the Soundbox (Week / Module 3): During this week, students will cut their channels and install the binding and purfling. The end-graft will also be cut and installed during this week. Additionally, students will be cutting the mortise in the neck block to receive the neck tenon and will finish-sand the soundbox. We conclude with week with construction of the fingerboard and neck. Neck Carving and Final Assembly (Week / Module 4) During this module, students will focus on completing and assembling their guitar. They will be well underway with neck carving, completing the fingerboard, installing frets and learning to carve the headstock and heel. Additionally, students will be making and affixing their bridge during this week. We conclude 'Week 4' with final sanding in prep for the finishing phase and setup during the final week. Finishing & Setup (Week 5) The final week of the course is reserved for finish work. Students have the option of learning how to apply either a French polish or a hand-rubbed oil finish. We sum up the week with the final setup.
